Das Bunker
How one LA promoter uses Hive Ads to fill underground shows without the Meta headaches

MEET DAS BUNKER
Das Bunker is not a venue. It's a feeling.
Founded in 1996, Das Bunker is Los Angeles' longest-running industrial and dark electronic club night, currently held at Catch One in Mid-City. For 30 years, the brand has brought together fans of harsh European industrial, goth, and EBM: an audience that is passionate, niche, and deeply loyal.
John Giovanazzi has been behind the scenes since 2003. He concepts the events, handles the booking, art directs the creative, and manages all marketing himself. Every hour spent fighting ad platforms is an hour not spent on the show.
Das Bunker’s audience is a micro-community. Generic interest targeting on Meta doesn’t reach them, and getting first-party ticketing data into Meta was a manual, time-consuming process.
On top of that, Meta’s platform kept getting in the way. Billing mysteriously disabled. Ads paused without explanation. Three weeks of support back-and-forth to resolve a billing issue. Meta's AI tools making uninvited creative decisions.
"They were changing the face of my headliner artists. 'Hey, we think these ads will deliver better.' I was like, 'Oh, you turned my headliner artist into a model.' Maybe not the best idea for this one."
Setting up a basic, repeatable campaign meant navigating layer after layer of submenus built for e-commerce, not event promotion.
"Its unnecessary to spend hours setting up a basic ad that I run all the time."
John was already using Hive for email marketing. When Hive Ads launched, the appeal was immediate: his past ticket buyer data was already in Hive. He could build segments, launch campaigns, and track performance without switching platforms.
The value of Hive Ads wasn't just convenience. It was that someone had finally built a tool that understood the problems event marketers actually run into with Meta.
"I don't have to work in Meta. I think you guys are there to recognize those things."
He tried the trial period and found it promising enough to commit.
"At first I was hesitant to commit, but the trial period allowed me to really test it out and encourage me to continue."
John's campaign approach has a clear logic, and Hive Ads fits into each phase.
1. Wave one is organic and free.
When a show goes on sale, he uses email sends and organic posts to get the word out with no ad spend. The message is informational, not promotional. He doesn't start paid ads until phase two.
2. Paid ads run in the last two-thirds of the campaign.
Once he knows who has engaged, he uses Hive to retarget and build audiences from past ticket buyers.
3. FOMO campaigns close last-minute buyers.
His most effective tactic targets people who clicked the ticket link but didn't buy, combined with people who attended similar events.
4. Ads win back unsubscribed past buyers.
Hive Ads lets John target audiences of past ticket buyers who have unsubscribed to reengage them and make sure they don't miss a show.
"You can target an audience of people that went to similar things but then unsubscribed from your email lists. That's a very valuable advertising target audience I found. It's a win back. A next level win back."
5. Creative is story-led, not transactional.
Rather than "tickets almost sold out," John finds the angle for each artist: two lines that speak directly to why this show matters. He also uses meme-based creative tailored to each micro-audience.
"If you speak to your audience in a way that makes it clear that you understand them and speak the same language, they'll feel more comfortable engaging."
6. Budget follows performance.
When a campaign is working, he doubles down mid-campaign. When another channel underperforms, he shifts that budget to Hive Ads.

"It's so much easier. Not having to go through Meta’s sub-menus of things that are not relevant is probably the best thing."
Das Bunker has stayed relevant for 30 years by speaking directly to a community most platforms don't understand. John's advertising philosophy is an extension of that.
"Ads allow you to push and tell your story without annoying your followers and your feed. That's always where I start when I'm planning a campaign: is this going to be annoying?"
For promoters running niche shows on tight timelines, Hive Ads removes the platform friction that turns ad management into its own full-time job.

"I feel that's what separates a lot of the more successful people in my position from the least successful. Some people are just extremely unwilling to invest in advertising at all. And you have to."
